WAARSCHUWING ESGE-spatborden

Hallo allemaal,

Ik ben nieuw op deze lijst. Mijn naam en werkplek staan in de
signature. Daarnaast ben ik secretaris van de Fietsersbond enfb.
Ik heb een Challenge Wizard.

Het volgende bericht heb een enkele dagen geleden naar eurobike
gestuurd.

------------------------
Last weekend I did a recreational ride with a group of
recumbents. A lot of these bikes have suspended rear forks.
The mudguard is on these bikes attached to the bike with two sets of
rods (one about horizontal backward, one straight up or a little
backward) and one bolt at the horizontal rear fork. With non-
suspended forks there is a FOURTH attachment to the vertical rear
fork.
This fixation on four points is essential; on three points attached
the mudguard vibrates a lot. Due to material fatigue the mudguard
will eventually tear at the front bolt. Then the mudguard will be
transported by the wheel until it is between the ground and the
wheel. Then you will loose all control of the bike. Especially with
plastic mudguards this will happen suddenly
One of this group had this accident two weeks ago with rather serious
leg injuries.
With recumbents the combination of Challenge bikes with ESGE-
mudguards are reported to have this problem, but there may be a lot
of other combinations with the same problem.
THE PRODUCER OF THE CHALLENGE BIKES IS FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM BUT
IS STILL IGNORING IT.

What to do?
1 : put a short piece of an old metal mudguard between the front bolt
and the mudguard (at the wheelside). If the mudguard breaks, it will
stay in position. It is expected to vibrate less anyway.
2: buy an extra set of rods and attach these to the mudguard. This
may be a lot of work.
